Tignes is high, snow-sure skiing: the resort sits at 2,100m with the Grande Motte glacier above it, and with Val d’Isère it makes up 300km of pistes between 1,550m and 3,456m. Students stay at a ski academy in the heart of Tignes with the piste at the door, ski five hours a day with the ESF, and spend the evenings at the pool, on the snow-tubing lanes, in the games room and at the bowling alley by the lake.

A SKI ACADEMY WITH THE PISTE AT THE DOOR

A ski academy at 2,100m in the heart of Tignes, built for young athletes and open to school groups outside its training weeks, with the piste starting a minute from the door. Students share twin, triple and quad rooms with private bathrooms, and the on-site kitchen cooks balanced meals for a day on the mountain.

The building has a games room with table tennis, billiards and darts, lounges and study rooms, an e-library, a yoga studio and an auditorium for a film night, and the staff have use of the gym and the spa. Groups of 90 or more have the whole place to themselves.

The evenings are a swim at the Le Lagon pool, snow tubing on the purpose-built lanes, a jewellery workshop, games nights in the building and bowling in Tignes Le Lac. Dietary requirements are catered for once the school has sent them to us, and our Schools Go Skiing Leader stays with the group all week.

WHAT SETS US APART

SKIING IN TIGNES

Tignes and Val d’Isère share 300km of pistes and 78 lifts between 1,550m and 3,456m, with the Grande Motte glacier above Tignes keeping the season open from November to May. The slopes around Tignes itself are wide and open, well above the trees, with the beginner areas beside the resort. Lessons are five hours a day in groups of eight to ten students per instructor.

The nursery slopes are at the edge of Tignes, a few minutes from the door, wide and gentle with their own lifts, so first-timers are on snow within minutes of leaving breakfast. By the end of the week the blue runs above the resort bring them back to the village on skis.

300km with Val d’Isère

Intermediates have long blue and red runs on both sides of the valley and the lift link across to Val d’Isère, and stronger groups go up to the Grande Motte glacier at 3,456m and ski back down to the resort on one long run. The pass covers the whole area.

Lessons with the ESF

Lessons are with the École du Ski Français, whose Tignes instructors teach school groups in structured ability levels, in groups of eight to ten students per instructor for five hours a day. Equipment is fitted at a hire shop in Tignes 2100 on the first evening, and the week ends with a race, conditions allowing, and an awards ceremony.

SKI-IN, SKI-OUT

The piste starts a minute from the academy door at 2,100m, so there is no ski bus, no coach and no walk in ski boots: the group clips in after breakfast and skis to the lesson meeting point.

SKI Equipment hire

Skis or a snowboard, boots, poles and a helmet for every student, fitted at a hire shop in Tignes 2100 on the first evening and matched to each one’s height, weight and ability.

EAT AND DRINK

A breakfast buffet and a hot dinner in the academy restaurant, with lunch on the mountain every day. Dietary requirements are catered for.

TRANSPORT

Flights into Geneva, three hours from Tignes, or Grenoble at two and a half, with a private coach waiting at arrivals. In resort the group skis from the door, and the bowling alley in Tignes Le Lac is within walking distance.
