HEY,
JASPER

fact Canada’s highest
base elevation,
1,698m

Jasper is a small town in the middle of a national park in the Canadian Rockies, and Marmot Basin, a short drive up the road, is its ski hill: 91 runs across five mountain faces, the highest base elevation in Canada and lift lines that rarely form. Students stay in the town, ride the daily shuttle to the slopes, ski five hours a day with Marmot Basin’s own instructors, and spend the evenings skating, walking a frozen canyon and looking at the stars in a Dark Sky Preserve.

SKIING IN JASPER

Marmot Basin is Jasper’s ski hill, a short drive from the town inside the national park: 91 runs on five mountain faces served by seven lifts, from a base at 1,698m, the highest in Canada, to 2,612m. Sixty per cent of the runs are green or blue, the season runs from November to May, and the slopes are quiet. Lessons are five hours a day with Marmot Basin’s own certified instructors.

Beginners on the School House chair

The beginner area is at the base, around the magic carpet and the School House chair, on wide green runs with the day lodge beside them, so first-timers are never far from a hot chocolate. By the end of the week the long green runs from mid-mountain bring them down the whole hill.

Five faces, few queues

Intermediates have long blue runs off the Eagle Ridge and Paradise chairs through the trees, and stronger skiers go up the Knob chair into the open bowls above the tree line. With seven lifts for the whole hill and few people on them, the group skis more and waits less.

Lessons with Marmot Basin’s snow school

Lessons are with Marmot Basin’s own snow school, five hours a day with certified instructors and a supervised hour for lunch, with helmets provided for everyone and equipment set up and waiting in the school groups’ own fitting area on the first morning. The week ends with a fun race on a set course and a certificate for every student, and the resort’s group team meets the staff each day to adjust anything that needs it.

What a week in Jasper includes.

SKI EQUIPMENT HIRE

Skis or a snowboard, boots, poles and a helmet for every student, pre-set from the sizes the school sends in advance and waiting in the school groups’ own fitting area at the base lodge on the first morning.

EAT AND DRINK

Breakfast and dinner at the hotel and lunch at the day lodges on the mountain, with a supervised hour built into the lesson day. Dietary requirements are catered for.

ACTIVITIES

Evenings are ice skating in town, a guided walk through the frozen Maligne Canyon, stargazing in one of the world’s largest Dark Sky Preserves, games nights at the hotel and a quiz with the end-of-week awards, with wildlife tours and dog sledding as options, arranged through Jasper’s own operators.

TRANSPORT

Flights into Edmonton, four hours from Jasper by private coach, or Calgary at five along the Icefields Parkway, and in resort the Marmot Basin shuttle runs from the hotel to the slopes each morning and back each afternoon.
The organisation throughout the entire process is truly excellent. From the initial planning stages through to the trip itself, everything is handled professionally and efficiently, making it incredibly straightforward for staff to manage and allowing us to focus on giving our pupils a fantastic experience.
