A PRIVATE HOTEL ON THE EDGE OF THE VILLAGE

A hotel at 1,940m on the edge of Obergurgl, taken over privately by our groups in December and April, so the only other guests are the school’s own staff. The pistes start beside the building and the village centre is a five-minute walk.

The buildings are old Tyrolean houses restored inside, with 40 twin ensuite rooms, lounges, a games room, study rooms for any work that has travelled with the group, a fitness centre and a restaurant that serves the group breakfast and dinner. Lunch is a hot meal on the mountain with the instructors.

The evenings are mostly at home: hotel games, a quiz, a jewellery workshop and a film, with one evening down the valley at the thermal baths. Dietary requirements are catered for once the school has sent them to us, and our Schools Go Skiing Leader stays with the group all week.

SKIING IN OBERGURGL

Obergurgl sits at 1,930m at the head of the Ötztal, with 112km of pistes between 1,800m and 3,030m served by 25 lifts and shared with Hochgurgl across the valley. The height keeps the season running from November to April, the slopes are mostly blue and red, and the pistes are quiet. Lessons are five hours a day in groups of eight to ten students per instructor.

Snow from November to April

At 1,930m Obergurgl is one of the highest villages in the Alps, and its pistes top out at 3,030m, so the snow arrives in November and stays until the end of April. The ski area starts at the village, so the morning walk to the lift is a few minutes in ski boots, with no bus.

Wide, quiet, blue and red

The slopes are mostly blue and red, wide and above the trees, which suits beginners and intermediates building confidence through the week. Stronger skiers take the lift across to Hochgurgl, where the runs are longer and the top station sits at 3,030m.

Lessons with the village ski school

Lessons are with Obergurgl’s own ski school, in groups of eight to ten students per instructor for five hours a day with a hot lunch on the mountain in between. Equipment is fitted in the village on the first evening, and the week ends with a race, conditions allowing, and an awards ceremony.

TAKE A LOOK AROUND

What a week in Obergurgl includes.

SKI EQUIPMENT HIRE

Skis or a snowboard, boots, poles and a helmet for every student, fitted in the village on the first evening and matched to each one’s height, weight and ability, with a ski room at the hotel to store everything overnight.

EAT AND DRINK

A breakfast buffet and a three-course dinner at the hotel, with a hot lunch on the mountain every day. Dietary requirements are catered for.

ACTIVITIES

Evenings are hotel games and film nights, a jewellery workshop, a quiz with the end-of-week awards and one evening at the thermal baths down the valley, all included.

TRANSPORT

Flights into Innsbruck, an hour and a quarter from the hotel, or Munich at three hours, with a private coach waiting at arrivals. The slopes start beside the hotel, so there is no ski bus.
The tuition is also exceptional. The instructors are knowledgeable, enthusiastic and fantastic with young people, helping pupils of all abilities build confidence and improve quickly while having great fun.
