HALLO,
BAD HOFGASTEIN

fact Home of Die Nord,
the longest run in
the Eastern Alps

Bad Hofgastein is the spa town at the heart of Austria’s Gastein Valley, with the Schlossalm gondola rising straight out of town to 83km of snow-sure pistes. A family-run hotel in the centre, the Alpentherme thermal baths a short walk away and the same easy logistics as our Dorfgastein trips make it a strong choice for school groups.

FAMILY-RUN HOTEL

A FAMILY-RUN HOTEL IN THE TOWN CENTRE

A traditional, family-run hotel in Bad Hofgastein, a few minutes’ walk from the pedestrianised town centre and the Kurpark. The family have welcomed school and youth groups for years and know what a week with teenagers looks like, so the welcome is warm and unfussy, and the hotel feels like a proper Austrian home rather than a block of rooms. Its social spaces are a big part of that: lounges, a games room and a cinema room where the whole group can be together in the evenings.

Students stay in recently renovated twin and multi-bed rooms with en-suite bathrooms, wood-panelled walls and a desk, and staff have single rooms on the same floors. Breakfast and dinner are served in the hotel restaurant, a changing menu of regional and international dishes, with a hot lunch up on the mountain each ski day.

Evenings are easy to run here. There is a games room with a pool table and table football, a cinema room with a projector for movie nights, cosy lounges for quizzes and board games, and a sauna and steam room area for staff once the day is done. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

The ski bus stops directly outside the hotel and runs to the Schlossalmbahn gondola, about 1.5km away, where the ski school meets and the hire shop is next to the valley station. Heated ski and boot storage keeps kit out of the rooms, and the Alpentherme thermal baths are a short walk away for a swimming evening.

SKIING IN BAD HOFGASTEIN

The Schlossalm, Angertal and Stubnerkogel ski area links Bad Hofgastein with Bad Gastein across 83km of mostly blue and red pistes, with wide learning slopes at the Angertal ski centre and one of the longest runs in the Eastern Alps for the confident.

Reliable Snow and Ideal Conditions

The slopes above Bad Hofgastein run from 860m up to 2,300m on the Hohe Scharte, with the whole Schlossalm covered by snowmaking, so the season holds from late November to mid April. Modern gondolas, heated chairlifts and a clear, well-signed layout mean students spend their time skiing rather than queuing, and the north-facing Schlossalm keeps its snow late into the spring.

A Resort for All Abilities

Beginners start at the Angertal ski centre, a wide, gentle practice area in the middle of the ski area with its own lifts and the XXL Gasti snow park. From there, 31km of blue runs and 49km of reds give intermediates room to progress, while Die Nord drops 1,440m over 10km from the Hohe Scharte to the valley, the longest run in the Eastern Alps. The lift pass also covers Dorfgastein and Sportgastein, around 200km in total.

Efficient Lifts and Quality Instruction

Seventeen lifts serve the area, led by the two-stage Schlossalmbahn gondola that rises straight from the edge of town. Lessons are with a local English-speaking ski school in groups of no more than ten per instructor, five hours a day with a supervised mountain lunch. Hire is fitted at the Schlossalmbahn valley station, and the ski bus from the hotel door makes the morning run simple.

SKI EQUIPMENT HIRE

Skis, boots, poles and a helmet are included and fitted at the hire shop beside the Schlossalmbahn valley station, so students collect their kit where the lessons begin. Heated ski and boot storage at the hotel keeps everything dry overnight.

EAT AND DRINK

The package is full board. Breakfast and dinner are at the hotel, a changing menu of hearty Austrian dishes alongside the familiar, and a hot lunch is served in a mountain hut on every ski day. Dietary requirements are catered for with notice.

ACTIVITIES

Evenings mix the hotel and the town. A swimming evening at the Alpentherme thermal baths, a guided torchlight hike, tobogganing, a handmade jewellery workshop, and movie nights and games in the hotel’s cinema and games rooms. On December trips, Bad Hofgastein’s Advent market fills the old town centre with lit wooden stalls, a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.

TRANSPORT

Salzburg airport is about an hour from Bad Hofgastein, with Munich around three hours. Airport transfers are private coaches arranged by us. In resort, the ski bus stops at the hotel door and runs to the Schlossalmbahn, and the whole town is walkable.
They demonstrated perfectly how school trips should be run. Their promotional materials at the planning stage really helped to get the students excited and provide parents with peace of mind.
